Creative literacy to support inclusion for those with dyslexia and other barriers to learning.

Internationally recognised education advisor for ICT and inclusion Carol Allen to visit Australia in August 2018.

Carol Allen is a highly sought-after School Improvement Advisor for ICT and students with learning difficulties in the UK. She has taught since 1980 in both mainstream schools – primary and secondary, and schools for students with learning difficulties. Carol was recently recognised as one of 2018’s top ten educators using technology by the UK parliament.

Full-day Teacher Workshop
With a focus on dyslexia, this one-day workshop will explore the key barriers to literacy and their implications for curriculum access. Practical and easy to implement solutions will be shared with attendees, allowing teachers to take and try the strategies in their own schools.

Key topics include:

  • Accessible reading, writing and internet usage.
  • Blogging, skills-based activities and alternative formats for effective revision ideas.
  • The emotional impact of dyslexia and the barriers this produces.
  • Strengthening creative, visual and problem solving skills to support academic success.
  • Supporting students to understand their workflow preferences and learning to embrace these instead of hiding difficulties.
  • Using speech to text for writing support.
  • Video and the use of social media to connect with peers and share perspectives and expertise.
  • Examples of effective websites, apps and low tech supports to exemplify effective process and improve outcomes for students.

Save the Date for the 2019 Language, Literacy and Learning Conference

Preparations are already underway for the next Language, Literacy and Learning Conference to be held over three days at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on Thursday April 4th to Saturday April 6th, 2019. We are pleased to announce the conference theme, which is:

“Every Child a Reader. Every Child a Writer.”

The DSF Conference Planning Team are currently in talks with several Australian and international experts to present evidence-based keynote addresses relevant to educators and clinicians. Several very exciting presenters have confirmed. We plan on building on the enormous success of the 2017 Language, Literacy and Learning Conference by bringing to Perth presenters and exhibitors of an exceptionally high calibre who can share their knowledge, skills, programs and resources.
